What is ADAS?

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) encompass a variety of technologies designed to enhance vehicle safety and support the driver in the driving process. These systems rely on inputs from multiple data sources, including automotive imaging, LiDAR, radar, image processing, computer vision, and in-car networking. ADAS aims to automate, adapt, and enhance vehicle systems for safety and better driving. By reducing human error, which accounts for a significant number of road accidents, ADAS significantly improves driver safety.

In adapting ADAS for Australia, factors such as local road conditions, traffic rules, and driving behaviour must be considered. For example, ADAS functionalities can be customised to handle Australia's unique wildlife crossing alerts, accommodate left-hand traffic rules, and adjust to the specific speed limit regulations and road signs in the country.

5 Features of the ADAS System:

1. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): This system adjusts the vehicle's speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. It uses radar or LiDAR sensors to monitor the distance and relative speed of the vehicles ahead, automatically adjusting the cruising speed to maintain a predetermined gap.

2. Lane Keeping Assist (LKA): LKA helps prevent unintended lane departures by gently steering the vehicle back into its lane if it detects an inadvertent lane departure without the indicators being used.

3. Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB): This critical safety feature detects an impending collision with another vehicle or an obstacle and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not respond in time, thereby reducing the severity of the collision or avoiding it altogether.

4. Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR): By utilising camera systems to detect and read road signs, TSR keeps the driver informed about the current speed limits, no-entry signs, and other relevant traffic rules, directly on the vehicle’s display.

5. Blind Spot Detection (BSD): Sensors monitor areas around and behind the car that the driver cannot easily see. If another vehicle is detected in the blind spot, a warning signal is triggered, advising the driver not to change lanes.

5 Problems which can cause faults in ADAS Technology:

1. Sensor Malfunction: Dirt, mud, or snow can obstruct sensors, leading to incorrect readings or system failure. Regular cleaning and occasional recalibration, especially after incidents affecting sensor alignment (like minor collisions), are necessary.

2. System Misinterpretation: ADAS can sometimes misinterpret road signs or markings, especially in adverse weather conditions or with worn-out road paint. Ongoing system updates and calibrations can help minimise misinterpretations.

3. Calibration Issues After Repairs: After windscreen replacements or collision repairs, ADAS sensors and cameras might require recalibration to function correctly. Failure to recalibrate can lead to inaccurate system functioning, endangering safety.

4. Over-reliance by Drivers: There's a risk that drivers become overly reliant on ADAS, potentially leading to reduced attention and readiness to take over when needed. Education and awareness on the limitations of ADAS are crucial.

5. Interference from Aftermarket Products: Installing aftermarket products like dashcams or window tints can interfere with the ADAS sensors and cameras. It's essential to consult professionals before adding any aftermarket products to ensure they don't affect the ADAS functionalities.

Diagnosis of these problems typically involves using specialised diagnostic tools to read error codes from the vehicle's onboard computer. Dealerships and specialised auto repair shops like D & D Mechanical & 4WD in Goolwa being a member of the NexDrive programme can perform recalibration, which often requires proprietary software and equipment specific to the vehicle's make and model. This process ensures that all ADAS sensors and cameras are accurately aligned and functioning as intended.
